Plate Jointers Function
A plate joiner is also referred to as a biscuit cutter, this tool is specialized and is only used to perform one type of cut, or a mini saw cut. It makes thin slots in the edges of stock in order to hold a biscuit. The biscuit is similar in its design to a dowl and is used for the self same purpose, to hold stock together. Many people have tried to insert a slot cutting bit onto a router, in order to skip purchasing a plate jointer. When they do this the incurring cut is hard to control and many times will fail, and it is also very dangerous with unstable results. A plate jointer is a wood working tool that needs to be invested in, or at least rented, as you build everything from tables to cabinets.
