Polarized Eyewear - The  ”Driving” Lens

The Big Difference

Where many people may have a basic understanding of what a polarized lens is, or even if they just know it’s preferable to a standard lens, ask them to explain what the primary or key differences are between the two and you might find them at a loss. If your really looking for a good time, ask them to explain the primary differences between types of polarized lenses and then sit back and watch the head scratching begin. But this is where we can help, by opening your eyes to the world of Polarized lenses.

The main difference between uncoated tinted sunglasses versus polarized sunglasses is this; polarized sunglasses selectively eliminate and absorb the reflection from the light, whereas normal tinted sunglasses only decrease the light all at once. Uncoated tinted glasses can do more harm than good because the darkness of the lens can cause one’s pupil to dilate, readying the eye to actually accept  more damaging ultraviolet rays into the inner parts of your eye. Polarized glasses are instrumental in illuminating and showing the details of colors, by removing glare and contrasting them when the sun is bright. Polarized lenses are many times referred to as “driving” lenses, as they  can reduce the glare that comes off a long flat surface that reflects light such as a road. Ultimately, polarized lenses are used to block and absorb  hazardous Ultraviolet rays, and reduce or eliminate intense light and glare.

Polarized Eye Wear and Where it Works Best

Polarized eye wear like the Pyramex Polarized Safety Glasses contain lenses that are made from a special polarizing film. This film is applied to the front surface of the lens itself, many times a reflective free coating is applied as well to aid in the fight against glare. As the suns light rays filter through the lenses, your vision is improved. Polarized glasses work the best on a horizontal plane, therefore any time you are wearing your glasses for driving on a long flat road,  you are going to be able to get the very best use out of your eyewear, however in uneven terrain they are not so suitable for use. It is important that the Polarizing filters are aligned exactly 90° to the angle of the actual polarized light. The polarized eyewear lenses are designed to stop the polarized light in the horizontal plane, therefore the filter is placed vertically in the eye rim of the glasses. If this process is not followed during construction of the eyewear,  it would result in a pair of glasses that the filter did not work properly.
